IMHO Venus cycles may be at the root of the Mayan Calendar.

There is a very important Venus event coming in 2012,
the occultation of Venus and the Sun on June 6th, 2012
at 15 degrees of Gemini. The eclipse Dec 10 was at this degree, so 
watch for the connection between Dec 2011 and June 2012.

Eclipses of Mercury and Venus

A passage of a planet across the disk of the Sun may be thought of as a special kind of eclipse.

As seen from Earth, Mercury and Venus are the only possible planets to do this.

These events are also far more rare than eclipses of the Sun and Moon.

There are on average 13 transits of Mercury eclipses each century.

Transit/eclipses of Venus usually occur in pairs with eight years

separating the two events. We are in between one of these

Venus/Eclipse events from 2004 to 2012.

This eclipse cylce of Venus corresponds to Mayan calendar lore.

Because Venus’s orbit is considerably larger than Mercury’s orbit,

transits of Venus are much rarer.

Indeed, only six such events have occurred since the invention of the telescope

(1631,1639, 1761,1769, 1874 and 1882).

Transits of Venus eclipses are only possible during early

December and June when Venus’s orbital nodes pass across the Sun.

Transits of Venus show a clear pattern of recurrence at intervals of
8, 121.5, 8 and 105.5 years.

At the present time, all transits of Mercury eclispses fall
within several days of May 08 and November 10.

• April 1877: A telephone line connects the workshop of Charles Williams, Jr., located in Boston, to his house in Somerville, Massachusetts at 109 Court Street in Boston, where Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Watson had previously experimented with their telephone. • 1 December 1877: Western Union enters the telephone business using Thomas Edison's superior carbon microphone transmitter.
• January 1878: First North American telephone exchange is opened in New Haven, Connecticut.
• 4 February 1878: Thomas Edison demonstrates the telephone between Menlo Park, New Jersey and Philadelphia, a distance of 210 km.
• 14 June 1878: The Telephone Company Ltd (Bell's Patents) registered, London. Opened in London 21 August 1879 - Europe's first telephone exchange, followed a couple of weeks later by one in Manchester.^[5]
• 12 September 1878: the Bell Telephone Company sues Western Union for infringing Bell's patents.

The 2012 transit of Venus will be visible from North America, the Pacific,
Asia, Australia, eastern Europe, and eastern Africa.

Circumstances for Cities (USA)

From the Western Hemisphere, Venus will transit across the disk of the Sun on 2012 June 05. This rare event will be visible from many locations around the world. Table 2b presents the topocentric contact times (Universal Time) and corresponding altitudes of the Sun for 60 cities throughout the USA. For international (non-USA) locations, see table 2a.
